Working with a copywriter for the first time
If you’ve never worked with a copywriter before, it can be hard to know what to expect. What do you need to prepare? How much of your time will it take? And how does someone who doesn’t know your business end up writing about it in a way that actually sounds like you?
Here’s what the process looks like when you work with me.
It starts with a conversation
Every project begins with getting to know your business. That might be a call, an email exchange, or a more detailed brief, whatever works best for you and the kind of work we’re doing together. There’s no single formula because no two businesses are the same.
What matters at this stage is that I understand what you do, who you do it for, and what you want your content to achieve. I ask a lot of questions. Some of them might feel unexpected, even unrelated to the work, but those are often the ones that give me the most to work with.
You don’t need to have the words
This is the part that surprises most people. You don’t need to come to me with polished ideas or perfectly formed sentences. You just need to know your business – and you already do.
What I’m good at is taking what you give me, however technical, unfocused or hard to articulate, and turning it into language that works for the people you’re trying to reach. That’s the whole job. You explain your business in your words and I find the right words for your audience.
The writing and revision process
Once I have a clear picture of what’s needed, I get to work. Depending on the project, I’ll deliver a first draft for you to review and respond to. This is a collaborative stage and your feedback is how we make sure the work sounds like you rather than like a template.
Revisions are also part of the process. Getting the words right can take more than one pass and I’d rather take the time to get it right than hand over something that doesn’t quite fit.
What you end up with
The aim is always the same: content that clearly explains what you do, sounds like you, and works for the people you want to reach. Whether that’s a full website, a set of service pages, or an ongoing blog, the goal is writing that feels like yours, because it is.
If you’re thinking about working with a copywriter and want to get a sense of whether we’d be a good fit, the best place to start is a conversation. Get in touch and let’s talk about your business.
